Sulphur Oxides Emissions in Europe

  1. Source: Eurostat. The graphs represent the emissions of sulphur oxides in the EU. The largest sources of SO2 emissions are from fossil fuel combustion at power plants and other industrial facilities. Smaller sources of SO2emissions include industrial processes such as extracting metal from ore, and the burning of high sulfur containing fuels by locomotives, large ships, and non-road equipment. SO2 is linked with a number of adverse effects on the respiratory system.

Sulphur dioxide is also released by volcanic activity and can be carried many hundreds of kilometres by winds. It is one of the causes of acid rains.

  2. This chart illustrates the evolution of sulphur emissions in the years 2003-2012. You can order the countries alphabetically (with the control at the bottom), you can animate the plot (with the play button), or follow specific countries by selecting them in the frame on the right. Three kinds of charts are proposed: bubbles, barplot and lines (tabs on the top of the chart). Linear or logarithmic axes can be used.
